Today I'm excited to post my first finish of 2023. I'm calling this one The Happy New Year Quilt!
In truth this quilt is a twist on a block often referred to as a Nordic Star. The Nordic Star design has a long tradition in the knitting and weaving particularly in Scandinavian. In quilting variations of this wonderful 8-pointed star are quite popular and it's fun to see the variety of designs.
As I mentioned my quilt has a little twist, in looking for a way to make this a quick to piece version I moved the corner gold squares. If you look close you will see I moved the corner gold block away from between the points of the green star and added it to a sashing row. That gold block now falls in the center of a white area and also makes an added secondary design element
Below are some outer variations I played with before making my final piecing decision.
Less gold squares
More gold squares
*Sashing rows are1. 5" wide
*Finished quilt is 52. 5" X 62. 5"
*Quilting is a meandering design in Gold thread (non-metalic)
*Backing in flannel with *0/20 batting.
Have a wonderful day and Happy New Year!
MaryEllen
