Hollyhocks. Revisiting a old favorite (an early art quilt)

 DETAIL
On a recent trip to Duluth, MN I came across this wonderful patch of Hollyhocks.  Hollyhocks have always been a favorite flower for me as I remember my Grandma had them growing around her house.
The quilt below is one I did years ago(2015), it was inspired by Grandma and her Hollyhocks. I decided it needed to go back up on the wall for awhile!
Can you find the little gold butterfly pin on my piece?
The quilt is named Grandma's Flowers and it was one of my first art quilts.  The piece is an original design and I had a blast making it. I started the design with the flowers and then filled in the background with various blue fabrics.  I didn't use a pattern but rather built the piece as I went.

Quilting and hand embroidery help to add depth and movement.  The piece has a double batting, so it's really thick and heavy!  This quilt was also an early free motion quilting piece for me.
The piece finished at 63" X 65".

Below are some details of the quilt.  I used embroidery to add some movement to the flowers.
I hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane.
Have a wonderful day!
