My First Quilt - Revisited

Today's post is a project that was a labor of love.  Many, MANY years ago (the mid-1970's) I made a quilt for my parents for Christmas. And, now that sweet old friend has made it's way back into my possession. I'm sad to say it first came back to me as I was moving cross country, and was being used to wrap furniture in. But, that was only a part of a long history of being part of family events. And so, after years of use; from a bed quilt to car blanket, picnic blanket, furniture padding to scrap bag, I decided I needed to make at least part of this old quilt into a  more lasting memory piece.

The remains of my first poor old quilt.

It may not look like much to anyone else but this little scroll is very dear to me.
I started by cutting off one row of patchwork from the whole quilt. And, yes I am protecting and saving the rest of this old friend.
First I reinforced that single patchwork row with a fusible interface.
Some of the old fabrics are very thin and really needed some stability before I could add any embellishments.
Then it was playtime; embellishing the row of blocks with embroidery, ribbons, beads, lace, buttons and anything else I came across in the sewing room.
Below are some detail example of the embellished blocks.
The block row I used from the quilt was 4 inches wide and 40 inches long.  The finished scroll is attached with ribbon to an old wooden spool from my sewing notions collection.
Some photos of the scroll attached to the spool. The backing fabric on the scroll is the same backing fabric from the original quilt.
I hope you enjoyed seeing my little scroll.  Maybe it will give you some ideas of how to preserve a special textile from your life.
Have a wonderful day!
