Childhood Memories

Today's post is a recently finished wall hanging.. 32" X 37"

Last summer I spent some time doing a little redwork and I decided I should make them into something for my office. The four redwork pieces are from the book Work and Play Redwork through the Day by Dolores Strom of Lakadaisies.   (I did make a few changes to her designs. The little farmer and the girl on roller skates were both boys in the book).

I was really taken with these cute redwork designs as they captured some very personal childhood memories.

*The little girl jumping rope---  When I was little I fell off the front steps while jumping rope. Fifty+ years later and I still have the scar from that day. I remember how fast dad drove to the hospital and how upset my poor mother was.

* The little girl sewing--- I started sewing about age 5.  First I was making doll dresses but soon I was making my own clothes and entering them in the fair.

* The little girl roller staking--- I have wonderful memories of skate night with my church youth group when I was young.

*The little girl in the garden--- As I was raised on a farm gardens and fields were a big part of my growing up.

The layout was super fun to work on.  I just put the redwork pieces on the design wall and kept adding strips around them till it felt right. Next the embellishing started which is always my favorite part. You will find yo-yos, buttons, lace, hexagons, rick-rack, ribbons and embroidery stitches.  Finally, the quilting was done. I tried to use a variety of free motion quilting designs throughout to bring out the theme of each redwork piece. The quilting was done on my domestic machine. The backing and binding are reproduction 1930"s cotton fabrics.

Below are some detail shots.

This sweet wall hanging was so much fun to make. I hope you enjoyed seeing it.

I hope you are having a wonderful day!
