Fabric Organization

 Hi all,

I have been asked how I do my fabric organization (thanks Joan).  So today I will try to show what my storage looks like and hope it gives you some ideas.

First off is a photo of my fabric closet.  I recently moved and so this system is in a new location but very similar to my old storage system.  The biggest change is the amount of fabric I have. Before moving I worked very hard to downsize my stash. I didn't want to move tons of extra stuff so lots of projects and donations happened. Then right after moving and before I really was settled in, 2020 mask making hit. And, then closed shops and quarantines happened.  So my stash is at an all time low.

But, the basics storage solutions are the same.  Hopefully some day soon I will be out there shopping like crazy.

I like to keep things in clear totes and also marked. The boxes marked with colors are all quilting fabrics. The items in the 12" X 12" boxes are also marked.  I keep very few UFO's. I do have a few WIP's (works in progress)these are projects that I'm missing some item or another before I can finish them.  The two totes on the bottom are; one specialty fabrics and one netting. These are mostly for crazy quilting or craft projects.

This bag is kept under my cutting table. As I work odds and end get tossed in.  When it's full I will sort them back into my current system or cut up into squares (one of those 12" X 12" boxes).

Here is inside my Black, white, gray box. A year ago this would have been two large totes not one half empty small tote. I never keep a lot of  yardage, these pieces tend to be half yard to fat quarter size.  The plastic bag is small and odd shaped pieces.  These odd pieces come in handy for art quilts and craft projects. The other color labeled boxes are organized the same way.

If you look at sidebar under labels in "organization" you can find a post I made about cutting my scrapes into squares to be ready to work on scrap quilts.  I just keep a pile of these squares close to work on in between projects or to get myself going on those days I'm not feeling so creative.
If you look at sidebar in labels under"scrap", you can find some of the quilts made from these squares.
Hope this is helpful. I know I need an organized space to feel creative and ready to play.
Have a wonderful day!
