Doll quilt #3-Grandma's Button Box

Doll Quilt #3!
I'm really enjoying making these small quilt pieces. I find working small makes you think more about each detail as everything shows. So, even tho these pieces are small, (and so far simple patterns) the challenge is in refining your basic skills to be the best they can be.

Although I've made many things with half square triangles, I wanted to makes something that challenged me to be more careful with the process. I decided to do a piece just with just half square triangles, and small ones at that.
I started with 2 .5" square blocks (from my 2 .5' square block stash). I marked the point to point across the block and made seams 1/4"  on each side of that mark.

I cut on the marked line, pressed open and trimmed each block to 2". Basic stuff but when working small even a bit off makes a big difference.

Quilting was done just on the peach fabric with my domestic machine. I love the way the quilting gives each unit lots of dimension. Having pressed all the seams to the print fabric and then no quilting on the print fabric also has added to the puff. All that detail is meant to make each of those units look like little baskets. The little buttons I added were meant to enhance the idea of little basket of "flowers".
 Quilting before buttons
I then added "vintage" buttons and lace edging.
I call this piece Grandma's Button Box because of all the tiny buttons and because I will soon be a first time grandma!!!

The final piece is 16 .5" X 22". Although I call these pieces doll quilts this one seems to be working perfect as a small runner for my coffee table.  My plan is to also have hanging sleeves on all these pieces so they can be used in a variety of ways.

Hope you are having a wonderful day!
