Recycle!

Check it out, a happy trio of fall friends!

I had two twin size mattresses around the house that I really just needed to get rid of.  The problem is finding a way to recycle them. Checking around there didn't seem much hope of reusing them as whole mattresses. So my dear husband pulled apart both mattresses and cut apart the springs for me to reinvent into craft projects.

Quite the mess right. Two bags, a full box as well as some in my studio.
I next turned to Pinterest for some inspiration. I loved all of the cute little fall decorations I saw. Some of my favorites came from: Vintage with Lace, 3peas-in-apodprim.blogspot.com, and diyideapin.com,
I tried to put my own spin on what I saw with these three little guys!
One of the things I added was a base for the springs to sit on.  They can be a bit top heavy and I also didn't want the wire to scratch my furniture.   The base is a 4" X 4" burlap covered board, which can be found at any craft shop. I wired through the board and around the bottom of the spring.  I covered bottom of the board with felt. The small leaves on the base are hot glued over where I attached the wire.

I did my own designs for the faces, hats and decorations.
All three of the "heads" are simple stuffed balls made from  6-wedges of fabric. The wedges are sewn together, stuffed, turned right side out and the opening is sewn closed.
Faces are painted with scribbles fabric paint.
Hats and leaves are wool.
The scarecrows hair is burlap, he is sitting on a band of upholstery trim.
The witches hair is a strange fancy yarn. The witch and pumpkin are both sitting on black fancy apparel trim.

Hope your enjoying a colorful and fun fall!
