Moving Day

What a bummer to have a close friend move away.  Even in the day of phones, email, and text messages its not the same as lunch out with your pal!
I made this quilt for a dear friend! I hope she enjoys it as she cuddles the grandkids she now lives closer to.

I wanted to use the Friendship Star Block, because this block has a long history of being used as a going away/signature quilt.
I found a beautiful example of a The Friendship Star block quilt on Pinterest. The quilt appeared to be a friendship star block in a really fun layout design. The quilt was a tutorial on making a Milky Way quilt by Janet Wickell. The Janet Wickell tutorial is on her site the Spruce Crafts.
I also found a Milky Way block in Jinny Beyer's book The Quilter's Album of Patchwork Patterns, page 206. She referenced that design as coming from the Ladies Art Company, 1928.

I made this quilt years ago (2011) from friendship star blocks I was given when I moved across country. We were a small group of 5 quilters.  On the top border I added 4 little birds (for the four of them) and on the bottom border the one little bird (me) heading off.
The quilt has been hanging in my studio all these years as fond memories of my first quilt bee group.
