Box Step

For this design I wanted to mix fussy cut flowers with  a pattern that had a feeling of spin or movement.
I also wanted a simple block pattern so the focal squares (made with the fussy cut flowers) would really pop.

I found a block I really liked in Jenny Beyer's book; The Quilter's Album of Patchwork Patterns.
The block is called Flying Squares (page 188). She credits the block to: "Flying Squares, Ladies Art Company, 1897 also known as: Flying Squares, Nancy Cabot Chicago Tribune, 1933"
I did make some changes to make my version of the Flying Squares block:
first the center blocks were changed from a solid block to four small squares.
Second, I added another four block square(a fussy cut square) in the four corners of each block.
I'm not sure what the square size was used in the original  pattern.
For my version I used a 4" square (3 1/2" finished).
Fussy cut squares are 4- 2 1/4" squares joined together (4" finished).
I also am not sure what the original full layout design looked like.
For my layout I went with what I felt was most basic.

Photo 1 Above:  My version of the full block.
Photo 2 Above:4-4" corner squares are also fussy cut if you were to draw them together.

I named my quilt Box Step as it reminds me of the 1,2,3,4 count when dancing the box step.
Finished quilt: 65" X 65", 80/20 batting, machine quilted on my domestic machine.
