Giving little sister a ride

This piece is based on one of my favorite family photos.
Now that both "kids" are 30+ I thought it was finally time to use it in a piece of art.

Below- Photos of my inspiration pieces: vintage textiles and a personal family photo.

The silhouette portion is an appliqued piece using various black cottons. The cotton pieces have raw edges and are joined by machine embroidery stitching.
Below-Photos of the applique piece in progress.

Below-Detailed photo of the decorative stitching on the silhouette applique piece.

Below-Photo of a "first" finish.

This was a case of thinking I was all done and, then.........
When I started to post photos something about this piece just wasn't working for me.
First - I really felt like the binding was too harsh.  I had used a cute black fabric with ABC's but it seemed to stiff and confining.  So off it came!
Second - The arch in the vintage linen gave the piece an uneven feel.  I added more embellishments in the bottom right corner for balance.
I really like how the changes worked out. I hope you agree it was an improvement.

I think the changes help this piece to work much better.
This was a nice reminder to look at your work in different ways as you go.
Try taking a photo, experimenting with a different backgrounds, or trying different lighting to see new possibilities. Be open to new inspirations along the way. Sometimes it may be just leaving a piece alone for a bit.  This can really help you to look at your piece in a fresh way.
Don't wait till your done to try these ideas (like I did on this piece).  Do things along the way so you don't find yourself  ripping finished projects.

Vintage quilt piece, lace, buttons, muslin and other embellishments.
Quilting done on my domestic machine.  Finished size is 18" X 19".
