Down the Rabbit Hole

I call the piece in this post  "Down the Rabbit Hole".

At first glance you may think my title comes from the black squares. Maybe they look like holes?  However, the title is really a reference to all those scrap fabrics.  Just when I would think I was done,  I'd dig in my boxes and add a few more fabrics. The next thing I knew I had a full size quilt!

I got a little carried away with the design on this one.  I wanted all the blocks to be very different in size. Overall I wanted a really loose and carefree design.
Each block is a basic log cabin design. However, the bars are all different in widths. The number of bars in each block is totally random, just what I needed to make the blocks fit together.  And, as you can see I used fabrics in every color and pattern.

After the blocks were made I began the cut process. First I cut the blocks in uneven half pieces. After I finished that, I cut them in uneven quarter blocks.

What I seemed to forget was the blocks had to fit together at some point!
In the end I made each row the same height. The width of the blocks varies throughout and the number of block per row also varies.

An exception to all this is some of the rows stop part way across and a block that is two rows in height is worked in. The photo below details an example of the uses of double height blocks.

To make this all work I sometime needed to add to blocks on an individual bases. This help to get them all to the right height.  Adding to the height also meant adding to the width because, I wanted to keep the log cabin element. As a last step I added the gray borders because the quilt really seemed to need a frame. The binding is also scraps of several fabrics.
Down the Rabbit Hole is 79" X 71" and machine quilted on my domestic machine in a circular pattern.
Wow, hope that makes some sense! I will NOT be making a pattern of this!  But I do have a idea for another piece from working on this one. So keep watching to see what might happen.

I also wanted to mention that when I started this piece I was inspired by the look of several quilts on Pinterest. In particularly a quilt from Exuberant Color.  It took me a bit to track down who that was but it was worth it. Wanda S. Hanson has a wonderful blog and website by that name. So fun to see her other work!
