Art Quilt-Hydrangea

Back in April I posted a detail photo of a Hydrangea plant I received for Easter.  The hydrangea was so beautiful it inspired me to make an art quilt. It was a fun challenge to blend and shade colors to get the feel of all the beautiful buds on just one plant.

Mounted on a 18.5 X 12.75 artist board.

I started with a  fabric I had hand-inked.
The flower heads are layers of small fabric squares (app. 1") built up to add a feeling of depth.

   First layer

  More layers

Details are added to each petal with machine stitching, paint and hand stitches.
Auditioning background colors. I decided on the dark green.
The finished piece has a clean turned edge binding and is mounded on an artist board.
The back of the fabric piece has two plastic rings. The wire goes from the back of the artist board through one hole of the button, through the artist board, through the plastic ring, back through the artist board, the other hole in the button and twisted tight.  This hold the piece on. At this point I have two buttons one on each corner. Another wire wraps around the button on one side and over around the other button, for a hanger.
